Don't Leave People, Lead People

Many people would rather leave people alone than lead and manage them.

This is because it takes lots of courage to lead people. Managing people involves coaching and mentoring, and many people don't know how to do it. They have 5 main fears:  
 

Fear No. 1: People Just Don't Change
No point keep on asking people to change. Until people can see a benefit in changing and a pain in status quo, they will not change. Ask them what is their ideal life and how do they see themselves in achieving that if they do what they are doing now. And just wait for their response 

 

Fear No. 2: People Don't Know How to Change
Start with easy first steps that give instant results.  For people in sales, it would be to call 5 more people a day.

Fear No. 3: Why My People Only Focus on Pay and Nothing Else?
This is because your people don't see value in what your company and what you do. To many people employers are just out there making profits and care little for employees' future. Focus on your people's future and how they can get there using your company as one of the vehicles.  

 

Fear No. 4: Why Are We More Busy Than Ever?
Because we are all focused on operating the business, not building the business. When you build the business, your business will grow on its own.  
Building a business is about duplication and sustainability. Do you duplicate or are you just doing everything by yourself?  When you coach and mentor people, they can duplicate on their own. When you teach them, they need to come back to you when they have problems. So it is far better to coach and mentor than just imparting knowledge.

 

Fear No. 5: Why I Don't See Immediate Improvements  After Training?
This is because you do not have an action plan. In our trainings our trainer AndyTheCoach issue issues 'wake-up calls' to move people to change. A common wake-up call we issue is to get people to change their daily and weekly routine and get out of their comfort zone.

Sun Tzu (or Sūn Zǐ in pinyin) was a 500 BC Chinese general, military strategist, and author of The Art of War, an immensely influential ancient Chinese book on military strategy. Many great leaders like Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan study his work and became legendary leaders. Many corporate leaders paid thousands of dollars to attend courses to learn Sun Zi secrets.

To subdue the enemy without fighting is supreme excellence. In short, win without fighting is the best. 
 
How does it apply to your leadership? 
  1. Enemy here refers to not your enemy but your team that you are leading. 
  2. Take the enemy state whole and intact means you must lead your team wholly with not just their bodies, but also their minds, hearts and spirits. 
  3. Never destroy the bodies, minds, hearts and spirits of your team. So you cannot over-work them for you will be destroying their bodies and minds. You also cannot break their hearts by not delivering on your promises and make them give up on you. Finally, you may destroy their spirits when you unknowingly make them a fool in front of others.

  5. To win without fighting in leadership is to lead without your team knowing that you are leading them. A leader is at his best when people barely knows he exists, when the work is done, the team will say: we did it ourselves. This is because the leader has empowered the team so much and they have become so competent that they are mini leaders themselves, thus the leader is leading without actually leading them. This must be the highest form of leadership. Lead without Leading. 
  6. If you too want to be a great leader, learn from the master.
